My old mother used to tell me “Marry in haste, repent at leisure”.  I’m sure many of you have heard that saying – even done it to your detriment.  Well the same applies to selection of staff only it’s “recruit in haste, repent at leisure”.  And it’s just as costly as extracting yourself from an unfortunate marriage.

So why $20k?  This is a reasonable amount when you consider the poor quality work the wrong person in a job is likely to produce to say nothing of the impact they may have on other staff and your hard won customers.  It may be time consuming and a bit more expensive to go through the ‘due diligence’ that I call robust recruitment but actually it’s worth it when you consider that the research shows that 76% of all employee performance problems are caused by their managers and only 24% by the employee.  And I think that is conservative.
